The horizontal lines are drawn parallel the Equator,they go around the earth.They are known as latitude or parallels.latitude -180.Move from east to west.

The verticle lines are semicircles that run from the north pole to the south pole.They are called longitudes or meradian.longitude-360.Move from north to south.
