SOAP :- Soaps are sodium or potassium salts of higher fatty acids, EX:- Sodium Stearate.

(2) Soaps are prepared from vegetable, animal oils and fats.

(3) Soaps form curdy white precipitate with calcium and magnesium salts present in hard water and hence, are not used in hard water.

(4) Soaps have relatively less cleansing action.

(5) Soaps are biodegradable

(6) Soaps don't cause water pollution.

(7) Soaps can't be used in acidic medium as they are decompose into Carboxylic acids in acidic medium.

DETERGENTS:-

(1) Detergent are sodium alkyl sulphates or Sodium alkyl benzene sulphonates, EX:- Sodium n-dodecysulphate.

(2) Synthetic Detergents are prepared from the hydrocarbon obtained from petroleum.

(3) Calcium and MAGNESIUM salts of detergents are soluble in water and. Therefore , no curdy white precipitates are obtained In hard water and hence detergents can be used even in hard water.

(4) They can be used in acidic medium as they are the salts of strong acids and are not decompose in acidic medium.

(5) They have strong cleansing action.

(6) Generally detergents are non biodegradable but some of the detergents are biodegradable.

(7) Detergents cause Water pollution.
