in thermal power plants coal is used to make up steam and turn the turbine and in hydro plant potential energy of stored water is used to turn turbine and produce electricity.

in thermal power plant the source of energy is obtained by heating the water with helps of fuels and it is converted to steam .
in hydro power plant water is allowed to move in very high velocity thus getting the kinetic energy is converted to electric energy.
