Yes,being born as khshatriya was important in this period.They performed a ritual called hiranya garbha with the help of Brahmans and declare themselves to be khshatriya.

✒Yaa its considered as superior caste for ruling a particular area because in ancient times rulers are on the heredity basis father and son and then future generation rules and their reign is in the particular area and kshatriya were considered strong also.
