The Mughal period started in 1526, with the establishment of the empire by Babur. Babur belonged to a Muslim dynasty, which had its origins in Central Asia.
In 1556, emporer Akbar ruled over the Mughal kingdom. He was a just and wise ruler who encouraged arts and culture. His period is referred to as the 'classic period' of Mughal rule.
Shahjahan ascended the throne in 1628 and the Mughal empire reached it peak during his period. Mughal architecture of this time was superior and renowned world over.
The defeat of the Mughals by Nader Shah of Persia in 1737 was the beginning of their downfall. In 1858, the British took over India and Mughal rule ended completely.
