Since there is an obvious increase in density when a substance transitions from the vapor phase to the liquid phase, and almost all substances show a density increase from the liquid to the solid phase (water is an exception), then a sufficiently large increase in pressure will force a transition from vapor to liquid to solid, in other words, the substance responds in such a way to relieve the applied pressure.
