Effects of Reel Life on Real Life
Reel and Real life have mutual effect on each other. The stories of the television shows are inspired by actual happenings in the society. Hence it is very difficult to segregate the two.
Reality shows, unlike regular television soaps, have a greater effect on the society. People watch these believing that since they are reality shows, they reflect the society around and this belief can make them model their lives around the behaviour and conversations they watch. The effect can be both positive as well as negative.
Positive effect: Dance and music reality shows like 'Indian Idol' and 'Nach Baliye' bring out, to a certain extent, a healthy competitive spirit in the viewers. Talent and skills are encouraged by the judges and several participants later on have became professional artists employed by Bollywood directors. Programs like 'Satyameva Jayete' used to bring out social issues to the fore and would boldly voice people's concerns.
Negative effect: Programs like 'Big Boss' and 'MTV Splitsvilla' show lot of manipulation, greed, jealousy and spite. In the name of competition, the participants are subtly encouraged to bring out their negative personality which is unhealthy for any society. There is a danger that such shows can communicate wrong values in younger generation.
While the mutual effect is quite normal, television producers are taking advantage of the society at large and their psychology. It is very important for both the producers of shows as well as people to assess and take a responsible decision.
