The ruling BJP and the main opposition Congress, in the state of Madhya Pradesh have come face-to-face over the issue of bad condition in the state, as well as their maintenance

The issue was assumed significance after the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that he would write to the center asking it to hand over the maintenance of the National Highways in MP state government

The Chief Minister said that he was asking for this "as in the national highways in Madhya Pradesh are a very bad condition due to lack of proper maintenance."

Madhya Pradesh BJP President Lord Jhabh, who also supported Chouhan said that the national highways passing through the state, are replete with potholes.

The BJP's MPs from the state also staged a dharna under the leadership of Sushma Swaraj, The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, against "Center's discrimination towards the state."

Reacting to this, the state Congress president Kantilal Bhuria said that the Dharna had been organized in New Delhi only to divert people's attention from real issues.

He said that before asking the Center for handing over the maintenance of national highways, the Chief Minister should ensure that the condition of the state highways is good.

There are 14 national highways that pass through the state, with a total length of 3,714 km and a number of state highways, with a total length of 8,728 km.

Bhuria also said that during the meeting of the BJP core group, its MPs and MLAs admitted that the condition of the state highways was bad.
