For about 4000 years, the ratio of circumference to diameter has been the same for all circles which is approximately equal to 3. Egypt and Babylon had the earliest written approximations of π.

Rhynd Papyrus gave the value of  \pi  as (16/9)^{2} = 3.160493827....

In 499 AD, Aryabhata, the Indian astronomer used a value of 3.1416 in his Āryabhaṭīya.

The Wei Kingdom mathematician Liu Hui, around 265 AD, created a polygon-based iterative algorithm and used it with a 3,072-sided polygon to obtain a value of π of 3.1416
