Aldol condensation : Two molecules of aldehydes and ketones containing \alpha- hydrogen atom, in the presence of dilute alkali, undergo condensation to form \beta- hydroxyaldehyde or \beta- hydroxyketone.

This reaction is called aldol condensation.
