The gases are exchanged in the lungs. The lungs have small and tiny chambers called alveoli which play a vital role in the exchange of gases. The alveolar air consists mainly and mostly of oxygen whereas the blood coming to the alveoli consists mainly of carbon dioxide. After several metabolic activities in the body the oxygen is used up and carbon dioxide is remained in the blood cells. The oxygen present in the alveolar air gets diffused into the blood and the carbon dioxide in the blood is diffused into the alveoli. Then the oxygen is sent with the blood and the CO2 is sent out of the body.
