When the pendulum is at highest position it will acquire potential energy (but no kinetic energy) ,when it reaches at the position it will acquire max. kinetic energy(no potential energy) . hence here kinetic energy is converted into the potential energy and vice versa .hence the total energy remains unchanged (conserved)

The energy is conserved in a simple pendulum as when pendulum is at initial position it's kinetic energy is mgh and potential energy is 0 and when pendulum is at final position it's kinetic energy= work done is mgh and potential energy is 0, so,
mgh+0= mgh+0
= constant
so the energy is conserved.
