Semiconservative replication describes the mechanism of DNA replication in all known cells. It derives its name from the fact that it produces two copies of the original DNA molecule, each of which contains one of original strand, and one newly-synthesized strand.

During replication, each of the two strands of DNA would act as a template for the synthesis of a new strand. The two new DNA molecules would consist of one strand from the original molecule and a newly synthesized strand. This was called the “Semiconservative Model of Replication.” It is a completely new molecule.
