Rutherford chose gold foil for his experiment. because gold foil is very thin. he hit the gold foil from double charge helium atom called alpha particle. and he found that most of the alpha particle goes un deflected it means most of the specs within the atom are vacant. he found few alpha particle are deflected with a small angle it means some specs within the atom are not vacant . he fond that few (1/20000)of alpha particle are deflected in 180° it means with in a atom some heavy mass is present in very small specs
