The meaning of swaraj is self governance. Earlier this was limited to homes and houses. But, with the change if the time, the whole country came to be known as a swaraj (self ruling and independent country).

b. The ultimate aim of Gandhi's struggle was to attain Swaraj,which according to him meant Swa- Self and Raj meant - rule. It was seen synonymous with home rule, freedom from foreign domination. For Gandhi, self governance could only come about through community participation. All his major mass movements aimed at acquiring Swaraj. However the idea of Swaraj was interpreted differently by different people.
