It is composed of four chambers, many large arteries and many veins. The four chambers are called atrium and ventricles. A wall of muscle divides the heart into two cavities: the left cavity pumps blood throughout the body, while the right cavity pumps blood only through the lungs.

■ The right side of your heart receives oxygen-poor blood from your veins and pumps it to your lungs, where it picks up oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide.

■ The left side of your heart receives oxygen-rich blood from your lungs and pumps it through your arteries to the rest of your body.

■ The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood continuously throughout the body.

■ It is comprised of four chambers — the right and left atrium and the right and left ventricle.

■ The chambers of the heart work together by alternately contracting and relaxing to pump blood throughout the heart.
