atomic number of chlorine is 17 its electronic configuration is 2, 8, 7 so there are 7 electrons in its valence shell so its valency is given by
8 - number of Valence Electrons
which is equal to
8 -7
which is
1...................................
now for Sulphur atomic number is 16 its electronic configuration is 2, 8, 6 so there are 6 electrons in its valence shell so its valency is given by
8 minus number of Valence Electrons
which is
8 - 6
which is
2................................
