Ratio of non-fiction books : fiction books = 3 : 5

Define x:

Let x be the constant ratio

non-fiction books : fiction books = 3x : 5x

Find the number of non-fiction books not read:

Number of non fiction books read = 6

Number of non fiction books not read = 3x - 6

Find the number of friction books read:

Number of fiction books read = 13

Number of fiction books not red = 5x - 13

Solve x:

He had 3/4 as many non-fiction books left to read as fiction books.

3x - 6 = 3/4 ( 5x - 13 )

3x - 6 = 15/4 x - 39/4

15/4 - 3x = 39/4 - 6

5/4 x = 15/4

x = 15/4 ÷ 5/4

x = 3

Find the number of books altogether:

Total number of books = 3x + 5x = 8x

Total number of books = 8x = 8(3) = 24

Answer: Galvin bought 24 books
