I was born on 15th December, 1988 in a village named Balali, Haryana. My Father named, Mahavir Singh Phogat, was a wrestler and has won the “Dhronocharya” award. I have three sisters they are Babita, Ritu and Sangita. All are wrestlers and winners of medals. Sangita is married to Pawan kumar who is also a wrestler.
My medals list
I won my first gold medal in 2010 Commonwealth Games which was conducted in Delhi in the “55kg freestyle category”. In 2012 Summer Olympics, World Wrestling Championship and Asian Wrestling Championship, 2013 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship, 2015 Asian Wrestling Championship
I first started wrestling as fun at the age of 12, but, later it became a passion because my father wanted us to become wrestlers against all the jeers from the villagers. I had to train with the boys wearing shorts because I didn’t have girl competitors. My training starts at 4 in the morning and I have not got much of an education. I used to get dejected and would want to quit wrestling because of my father’s strictness but now I thank him for shaping me up. Otherwise, I would have got married at a very young age itself.
I feel that sports should be encouraged in every place and we should get more girls participating in wrestling. Education too is very important and eve-teasers should be punished severely.
I feel that a girl should have the freedom to make her own choice, she should be allowed to live free and should give proper education.
