Crossing over or chiasma formation occurs between Prophase I and Metaphase I of Meiosis. In thePachytene stage of Prophase I, the homologous chromosomes pair up and then each of the bivalents divide to form sister chromatids i.e. forms tetrad. Chiasma is formed and crossing over takes place.
