it's hard to explain without diagram but I'll try to help you

let AB be the height of tree= x m

let C is the point from where the tree is broken

so, AC = 5 m

let the distance between the base of tree and the top of tree touching the ground =AD=12 m

so here ACD is a right angle triangle where 90° is at point A

here the hypotenuse CD is either find by the Pythagoras theorem or by using trigonometic function

I think this question is to be done by using Pythagoras theorem because the base is already given, so:-

CD^2=AD^2+AC^2

CD^2=

 {5}^{2}  +  {12}^{2}  = 25 + 144 = 169

CD=

 \sqrt{169 }  = 13

So the total height of tree=AB=AC+CD

=13+5

=18 m (Answer)
