As the apical meristem grows and forms leaves, it leaves behind a region of meristematic cells at the node between the stem and the leaf. These axillary buds are usually dormant, inhibited by auxin produced by the apical meristem, which is known as apical dominance.

The apical bud of a plant is the primary growing point located at the apex (tip) of the stem. It is the dominant bud.
Axillary bud also known as lateral bud is located where the leaf petiole is attached to the stem. (petiole the stalk that joins a leaf to a stem.)
