The Bhakti and Sufi movements became popular during the medieval period. They gave importance to love and devotion to God. They did not approve rituals. They were not in favour of class and caste distinctions.

Tukaram, Ramanand, Namdev, Jnaneshwar, Chaitanya, Eknath, Surdas, Tulsidas and Mirabai were some Bhakti saints. Guru Nanak and Sant Kabir preached the unity of God and asked the people to follow a guru.

The Sufis lived a simple life. They lived in khanqahs. They were organized into silsilahs. The most popular silsilahs were the Chishti and the Suhrawardi silsilahs. Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti, Baba Farid, Khwaja Qutb-ud-din Bakhtiyar Kaki, Khwaja Hazrat Nizam-ud-din Auliya and Sheikh Nasir-ud-din Mahmud Chirag-i-Dilli were some famous Chishti saints.

Answer:

The Bhakti and Sufi movements became popular during the medieval period. They gave importance to love and devotion to God. They did not approve rituals. They were not in favour of class and caste distinctions. They preached brotherhood and religious toleration.

The teachings of Bhakti Saints were completely devotional and the teachings of Sufi Saints were more intellectual and spiritual. However, teachings of both the saints had a positive impact on Indian society, which resulted in a more spiritual and harmonious nation and established unity, peace, harmony and brotherhood in the country.
