•Defination:-

Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. Car emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen and mold spores may be suspended as particles. Ozone, a gas, is a major part of air pollution in cities. When ozone forms air pollution, it's also called smog.

•Causes:-

Our air is filled with dangerous airborne particles that can cause many respiratory diseases. Air pollution can be caused naturally as well as man-made.

•Thē Long-term and Short-term Effects of Air Pollution:-

•bronchitis.

•Lung cancer.

•Heart disease.

•Kidney failure.

•Damage to liver.

Air pollution:-

When air is carried up with harmful, unwanted substances, dust or smoke with some harmful gases that pollute our air is known as Air pollution. These substances contaminate our air.

Harmful effects of Air pollution:-

∞ Carbon monoxide is a very dangerous gas. When living organisms inhale this gas in access, it mixes with our haemoglobin and form carboxyhaemoglobin. Due to this oxygen level decreases in body and it causes unconsciousness or a person may die too.

∞ Oxides of sulphur (Sulphur dioxide and trioxide) are involved in causing various breathing problems and even they do damage our lungs.

∞ Fumes that come from industries is very harmful. It may cause irritation in our eyes, nose and even throat.

∞ Dust particles cause bronchitis.

∞ The lead oxide that is present in our automobiles finishes which leads to mental disorder.

Air pollution cause Acid rain:-

When Fossil fuels are burnt they release a lot of harmful gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulphur etc. All these gases escape to our atmosphere. When sulphur oxides react with water vapour they form sulphuric acid. When nitrogen oxides react with water vapour they form nitric acid.

Harmful effects of Acid rain:-

• It increases the acidity of soil and soil loses its fertility.
• It makes the water acidic which harms the life of aquatic animals.
• It is the main reason for destroyer of monuments ( Taj Mahal in Agra is turning off white/ yellow due to acid rain).
• It corrodes metallic objects.
