They are- Assertive sentence, Imperative sentence, Interrogative sentence and Exclamatory sentence.

(a) Assertive Sentence:-

Sentence that states something or mark a statement is called as declarative sentence. It is also called as Assertive sentence. It can be either affirmative (positive) or negative.

Example:

  • Ritu is the most intelligent girl (Affirmative)
  • Ritu is not the most intelligent girl (Negative)

(b) Imperative Sentence:-

Sentence that makes an order or gives an instruction or advice or makes an request is called as Imperative sentence. This type of sentence can also be either affirmative or negative.

Example:

  • Please get me a glass of water (Request)
  • Get me a glass of water (Order)

(c) Interrogative Sentence:-

Sentence which asks question is called as Interrogative sentence. The final punctuation is always a question mark (?). This type of sentence is classified into three types:

  1. Yes / No Question
  2. Wh- Question
  3. Choice Question

Example:

  • Do you have a pen? (Yes/no)
  • Which is your pen? (Wh- type)
  • Do you want pencil or pen? (Choice)

(d) Exclamatory Sentence:-

Sentence that expresses sudden feelings like a surprise or a shock is called as Exclamatory sentence. The final punctuation is usually, but not necessarily an exclamation mark (!).

Example:

  • What a lovely day!
  • Oops! She fell down again.
