How are ionic compounds coloured due to charge transfer?

Metal-to-ligand charge-transfer complexes arise from transfer of electrons from MO with metal-like character to those with ligand-like character. The transition will occur at low energy if the metal ion has a low oxidation number, for its d orbitals will be relatively high in energy.
