People living along the banks of river Narmada used to collect food by gathering.  Those people were skilled in the art of finding the right spots for gathering.  They gathered roots of the trees used for eating or drinking their juices.  They ate fruits and vegetables from trees.  They hunted wild animals with bows and Spears and later ate their flesh.
