After the death of ther father in the bombardment by Germans, the boys and Lucia where thrown onto the streets and were helpless. They later survived in a short shelter built by them amidst the rubble. For the next 3 years Germans ruled the city. The boys grew hating Germans. Later, when they felt everything was setting right, Lucia was diagnosed with Tuberculosis of the Spine. This forced the boys to do every sort of work to earn money for their sister's treatment.
