The Communist Party of Nepal was formed in 2006 BS ( 1949 AD) in Calcattua, India by Pushpalal Shrestha, the younger brother of Martyr Gangalal Shrestha. They participated in the uprising that overthrew the 104 years old Rana Oligarchy. This mother party split into numerous factions and groups often competing with each other and Nepali Congress (the socialist democratic party ), which was and is still the major political force in the country ever since it was founded. Nevertheless, the communist presence in Nepal has always been strong. The communist movement gave some popular leaders like Pushpa lal Shreshta, Madan Bhandari, Manamohan Adhikari, and Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda.
