The flexibility of the plasma membrane or cell membrane in certain organisms like Amoeba, allows them to engulf in food and other materials from the external environment of the cell by the process of endocytosis. There are mainly 2 types of endocytosis;

1. Phagocytosis- It basically means cell eating, a type of endocytosis envolving engulfment of solid food particles or other substances.

2. Pinocytosis- it means cell drinking, a type of endocytosis envolving engulfment of substances in liquid form from the external environment of the cell.
