Laser guns called Lidars are used to measure the speeds of moving vehicles. For example speeds of cars on roads.

Laser guns send short bursts of infrared light waves towards vehicles. They are reflected back by vehicles. These reflections are caught and the time delay multiplied by speed of light gives twice the distance of the Lidar from the vehicles.

The distance is measured again after some milliseconds . From the rate of change of distance speeds are found.
