Sankranthi Celebrations
I come from a small village in Andhra Pradesh which is called Pedapalem. Like any other village in India, people in Pedapalem depend on agriculture, the main produce being paddy. Sankranti is a harvest festival and is hence celebrated with pomp and revelry in our village. This is the season when farmers become prosperous and hence they invite friends and family and share their prosperity with them.
The festival is celebrated on 13th, 14th and 15th of January every year. My father being a farmer, we invite the people who helped my father in thefarming activities throughout the year and give them bonuses. They are invited for a festival lunch in my house and they are served with many delicacies like puran poli, pongal, mutton curry, and many more. My mother and me also put up 'bommala koluvu' (a display of dolls) every year and call friends and family for 'haldi kumkum'. In the night we make bonfire and sing songs around it. The symbolism of bonfire is to burn old things and bring in new things in life.
Sankrati is my most favourite festival and I love being in my village during this time.
