The complete question is,

A company produces batteries. On average, 85% of all batteries produced are good. Each  the battery is tested before being dispatched, and the inspector correctly classifies the battery 90%  of the time. What percentage of the batteries will be “classified as good”?

Given:

On average, 85% of all batteries produced are good.

The inspector correctly classifies the battery 90%  of the time.

To find:

What percentage of the batteries will be “classified as good”?

Solution:

From given, we have,

The percentage of good batteries produced by the company  = 85 %

⇒ The percentage of batteries that are not good = 100 - 85 %  = 15 %

As, the inspector correctly classifies the battery 90% of the time.

So, 100 % - 90 % = 10 % are incorrectly classified.

The batteries classified as good batteries out of 85 % good

=  90 % × 85 %

= 90/100 × 85/100

= 76.5 %

The batteries classified as good out of 15 % not good

=  10 % × 15 %

= 10/100 × 15/100

= 1.5 %

Therefore, the percentage of the batteries classified as good

= 76.5 %  + 1.5 %

 =  78 %
