According to the Representation of the People Act of 1950 a citizen of India who has attained the age of 18 can get himself enrolled in the voter's list.

Process of enrollment in the electoral roll:

1. File an application by submitting Form 6 to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Assistant Election Registration Officer of the particular constituency. The form can be downloaded from the website of the Election Commission or a person can get it from the offices of the ERO, Assistant ERO or booth level officers.

2. The application should be accompanied by a recent passport-size coloured photograph and photocopies of documents like proof of age and residence.

3. The application can be submitted before the concerned ERO or sent by post. It can be filed online on the website of Chief Electoral Officer of the concerned state or the Election Commission.

4. After necessary verification and inviting objections on inclusion of names the booth level officer the ERO orders the inclusion of the name in the electoral roll.

5. The decision of the ERO is communicated to the applicant by post or via SMS. Electoral rolls are available on the website of the CEO of the concerned state.

Voter registration (or enlistment) is the necessity that a man generally qualified to vote to enlist (or register) on an electoral roll before they will be qualified or allowed for a vote. Such enlistment might be programmed or may require application being made by the qualified voter. The tenets representing enlistment change between jurisdictions. A few jurisdictions have "election day registration" and others don't require enrollment, or may require the generation of proof of qualification to vote at the time of voting.

In a few jurisdictions, enrollment by those of voting age is obligatory, while in most it is discretionary. In jurisdictions where enlistment is deliberate, an exertion might be made to urge people generally qualified to vote to enroll, in what is called as a voter enrollment drive.
