(i) Acetic acid Reduction

CH3COOH ——LiAlH4/ether——-> CH3CH2OH

Reaction between Phosphorus Pentachloride and ethyl chloride

CH3CH2OH ——PCl3——-> CH3CH2Cl

Reaction between Ethyl chloride and NaCN

CH3CH2Cl ——NaCN——-> CH3CH2CN

On acid hydrolysis, propanoic acid is formed

CH3CH2CN ——HCL——-> CH3CH2COOH

(ii) Adding Sodium to propanoic acid

CH3CH2COOH+NaOH= CH3CH2COONa+H2O

Adding NaOH in presence of CaO to CH3CH2COONa

CH3CH2COONa+NaOH(CaO)= C2H6+Na2CO3

Oxidizing C2H6 with K2Cr2O7

C2H6+K2Cr2O7= CH3COOH
