(i) Reaction between Ethanol and Tribromide to form Bromo Ethane

CH3CH2OH ——PBr3——-> CH3CH2Br

Reaction with Magnesium in presence of ether

CH3CH2Br ——Mg/ether——-> CH3CH2MgBr

Acid Hydrolysis of Magnesium Bromo Ethane

CH3CH2Br ——CO2/H+——-> CH3CH2COOH

(ii) Convert Propanoic Acid to Ethanol

Reaction with Ammonia

CH3CH2COOH + NH3 ——->CH3CH2COONH4

On heating

CH3CH2COONH4——Heat-->CH3CH2CONH2

Reaction with Sodium Hydroxide in the presence of Bromine

CH3CH2CONH2—NaOH/Br2—->CH3CH2NH2

Acid Hydrolysis

CH3CH2NH2—NaNO2, dil HCl—->CH3CH2OH
