Why is water used to extinguish fire, even though it is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen?

here it is...!!
____________________________________________
Reason :
During a chemical combination, the product formed has its own properties and the reactants fail to retain their properties.
Hence, even though water(H2O) is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen, it won't show any of the properties of the individual elements. The new compound has its own properties and characteristics for which it extinguishes fire.
