i guess it's supplementary angles not complementary.

Given :-

two supplementary angles are (3x + 40)° and (x - 20)°

here, we've to find the value of x.

we know that the sum of two supplementary angles is 180°

therefore, (3x + 40)° + (x - 20)° = 180°

⇒3x + 40 + x - 20 = 180°

⇒ 4x + 20 = 180°

⇒ 4x = 180 - 20

⇒ 4x = 160

⇒ x = 160/4

⇒ x = 40°

if it's complementary angles. then x would be 17.5° which is not possible ∵ one of the given complementary angle is x - 20. 17.5 - 20 = -2.5° and angles can't be negative.
