The production of doubled haploid (DH) plants is one of the most important developments in biotechnology. Haploids and DH have been produced inBrassica ssp. using anther culture or isolated microspores. The microspore culture is a simple and affordable technique for production of DH plants, and therefore is the method of choice for plant genetic research and breeding programmes in oilseedBrassicas. Microspore culture is a useful tool in producing doubled homozygous lines for breeding since lines exhibiting desired agronomic traits can be rapidly obtained. Microspore culture is also useful in gene transfer, biochemical and physiological studies and in the production of desired traits such as herbicide resistance and fatty acid modification through mutagenesis and selection
