From front his position 9th

=>9-1 =8 ( excluding Jacob)

From the end his position 31st

=>31-1 =30 (excluding Jacob)

Total no of students in the class;

=>30+8 =38 ( excluding Jacob)

=>38+1 =39 ( including Jacob)

Hence the answer is 39

There are 39 students in the class

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

In a class, students are standing in a straight line

Jacob stands 31st from the end and 9th from the beginning

To find out:

The number of students in the class

Solution:

We know that if there are n people in a straight line then

The position of rth person from the beginning = n - r + 1 th position from the end

Therefore,

According to the question

9th position from the beginning = n - 9 + 1 st position from the end = 31st position from the end

or, n - 9 + 1 = 31

or, n = 39

Thus, there are 39 students in the class

Hope this answer is helpful.
