The British had stopped slavery in Assam in the year 1843. With the Slavery Abolition Act passed in the year 1833, the parliament of Britain had abolished slavery in a lot of the British colonies.
The act received the Royal Assent on 28th August 1833. It took effect on 1st August 1834.
However, the system was enacted in Assam a few years later, in the year 1843.
The British East India company abolished slavery by passing the Indian slavery act in the year 1843.
Although, slavery had been an established institution since the ancient times but it became more prevalent during the Muslim period in India.
Slavery continued through the 18-19 century. Even during the colonial period many Indians were traded as slaves to various parts of the world by the Britishers or the British Raj.
But later on the British East India company abolished slavery for the sake of humanity and ratified it by passing the Indian slavery act of 1843.
Later on the Indian Penal Code of 1860 made slavery a punishable offence under its provisions and effectively abolished the practice of slavery in the British India.
