If variations get accumulated from generation to gneration then they leads to formation of new species or speciation. And the resultant specie is more adaptabe and fit to the environment then the ancestor, so here if for the resultant specie natural selection along with reproductive success occur then ultimately it leads to rise in the population and elimination of the previous species which is now not more adaptable to the enviornment.
