JADIDISM:

  • JADIDISM is a movement of reform among Muslim intellectuals in Central Asia, mainly among the Uzbeks and the Tajiks, from the first years of the 20th century to the 1920s.

  • It took its name from oṣul-e jadid (new method), which was applied to the modern schools that the reformers advocated in place of the “old” (qadim) schools: the traditional maktabs and madrasas.

  • “Jadid” or “jadidči” became a synonym for reformer, while “qadim” or “qadimči” meant a conservative opposed to change.

  • These terms also suggested a generational divide: the jadids were, on the whole, younger men and looked to the future, whereas leading qadims were older and embraced tradition.
