When water gets scarce and leaves start wilting, the abscisic acid is stimulated in the roots.
The hormone then moves up the leaves.
As it moves up the leaves, it causes stomata to close preventing further loss of water.
In this way it prevents falling off of leaves due to lack of water.
Another importance of abscisic acid is that it promotes dormancy in seeds and tgusthus slows down growth.
