Milk for the Cat

Milk for the Cat is a children’s poem by Harold Munro. The poet describes how punctual and particular the cat is in getting her share of evening milk.

Every evening tea is served at five. All the curtains are carefully drawn and punctually the cat reveals her presence. She initially pretends that she has come for a casual visit but in spite of any hazard to the tea she is always on time.

Her eyes like two sparkling agates take a casual glimpse around but they slowly they turn to a hard glance to sight the milk she desires. Unable to trace the milk the cat then draws everyone’s attention by stamping her claws or raising her ears, stiffening her body and letting out a shaking purr.  The inhabitants of the room carry out with their usual activities.

The children eat and chat, the two old ladies fondly adjust their silk robes but the cat grows tense as it can’t find the milk. It shrinks with unfulfilled desire until the white saucer of milk comes down to it like the moon that shines amidst the clouds. The cat immediately swells up with joy and love for the milk. She cuddles close to it and laps the milk sinking in its white creaminess. Her body relaxes with pleasure and she is in an ecstatic fit. Her world then is only the world of milk till she licks the last drop. After that she replenishes the lingering taste and retires to the cosy arm-chair in deep slumber for the next three to four hours.
