Well, everyone thinks that the PM is all powerful, and can do almost anything.

All that you may read in other answers may also be correct but it is not the truth.

Actually, a PM is as powerless as is any ordinary Quora reader or a common man.

Strange you may say, but this is true. The basic power is held by the Parliament.

All the decisions of the Executive, the President, the Govt, the PM, the Cabinet, and the Council of Ministers, etc., are subject to the approval of the Parliament.

Yes, there might be a few things on which the parliament does not vote but all those actions / decisions of the Govt have to be within the parameters laid down by the Constitution, the Acts, the Laws and Policies approved by the Parliament.

The Prime Minister of India can be a benevolent dictator but can not be a tyrant.

This is the concept behind the separation of powers of executive and legislature.

And then there is an official watchdog-the judiciary and then we have the media.

  • Leader of the executive of the Government of India with all executive powers
  • Chief advisor to the President of India
  • Head of the Union Council of Ministers
  • Nominates his/her council of ministers and has authority over distribution of ministries
  • Presides cabinet meetings
  • Participates in parliamentary sessions and takes part in parliamentary debates and discussions
  • Prime minister can recommend names to the president to appoint the Chief Election Commissioner, Comptroller and Auditor General of India, Attorney General, Solicitor General of India and many other chief officials of India.  
  • Prime minister can decide upon various policies regarding the nation like foreign policies, military decisions, administrative and financial policies, agricultural reforms, etc.
