The Green Revolution was a period when the productivity of global agriculture increased drastically as a result of new advances. During this time period, new chemical fertilizers and synthetic herbicides and pesticides were created. The chemical fertilizers made it possible to supply crops with extra nutrients and, therefore, increase yield. The newly developed synthetic herbicides and pesticides controlled weeds, deterred or kill insects, and prevented diseases, which also resulted in higher productivity.

Starting in the 1960s, the green revolution (GR) agriculture increased crop yields in Asia including India and Latin America using high-yielding crop varieties and more fertilizer and pesticides, irrigation water, and farm machines—but with certain environmental costs in the long run. The green revolution (GR) did eradicate the hunger and famine and increased the rate of growth of food production more than that of population growth in India and other developing countries. India and many other countries achieved food self-sufficiency and even exported food to other countries.
Most of the negative impacts of GR agriculture was due to excessive use or misuse or unbalanced application of fertilizers and excessive or improper application of chemical pesticides, over use of irrigation water, over pumping of groundwater, excessive tillage, poor soil health management, etc. If these pitfalls are corrected, the GR agriculture could be turned into sustainable and ecologically benign intensive farming systems.
