The message conveyed other than by the characters is that appearances are deceptive as in the story Mr.Easton says that he is the Marshal and the man next to him is the culprit and they two are headed for Leavenworth prison but the two passangers nearby says that Easton is too young to hold the position and the other says that 'Did anyone ever know an officer to handcuff a prisoner to his right hand.' Thus we came to know that we shouldn't believe at everything without knowing the truth as Miss Fairchild did.
