$and \: your \: mother \: had = x + 6$

so

$(x )+ (2x) + (x + 6) = 40$

$x + 2x + 6 + x = 40$

$x + 2x + x = 40 - 6$

$4x = 34$

$x = \frac{34}{4}$

$x = \frac{17}{2}$

$x = 8.5$

$your \: mother \: has \: (x + 6 \: cars)$

$8.5 + 6 = 14.5 \: cars$
