Depending on certain conditions, hydrogen penetrates into lattice and it is absorbed on a metal surface. Due to the small size of hydrogen atom diffuses and does not need an exchange mechanism as in case of oxygen.

These atoms can move freely in the lattice and combines to form hydrogen molecules. The internal pressure determines the metal lattice stability. This phenomenon is known as Corrosion leading to degradation of metal surface.
